Abstract Traditional approaches for agent communication constrain participants to follow a protocol describing the interaction. These methods lack flexibility. Using commitments we can capture the semantics of the interaction and allow agents to reason about their actions and thus exploit potential benefits or handle disruption in the execution plan. We formalize commitments in a variant of event calculus. We provide operations and reasoning rules to capture the evolution of commitments through agent's actions. The approach allows detection of agents that are not complying with a given protocol. By keeping the task of the commitments created and resolved, we can infer which agents have breeched the contract. Any agent breeching the protocol is subject to penalizations. Policies are used to enforce permissions or restrictions in the execution phase, or to carry penalizing actions and to choose compensating actions in case of exceptions. |
