Abstract Agent technology has developed significantly in the last few years and is estimated to be one of the most prominent technologies for building the interconnected open systems of the future. However, the related methodologies for modeling and solving problems with this new technology are still a subject of active research. In the paper, we describe an approach to modeling a distributed complex problem, the SETI problem, using a multi-agent system and we highlight the key design decisions. The problem is solved by a society of autonomous agents that try to fulfill their individual goals and the overall goal of the system by maximizing their reward (a number of points given to an agent for localizing alien signals). We present the system general architecture, the agent functionalities, the associated algorithms and the communication capabilities, and we discuss the benefits and limitations of the approach. |
